Skinny Jeans

We live in an era where the line between menswear and womenswear is vanishing into thin air - women are wearing suits, pants, ties... men are sporting handbags, earrings, skirts and

*gasp*

skinny jeans.

"To be or not to be (in skinny jeans)" - that is the question.

Style is about as subjective a topic as there is, so I'm here not to tell you what's right and what's wrong. Rather, the purpose of this blog has always been to put forth practical advice that every straight man can use. This is not a blog for the fashion-forward-fashionista - its a guide for the typical straight guy-next-door who wants to look his best in order to be his best.

There's no doubt that skinny jeans are still controversial. Many will say nay, but Straight Eye for the Straight Guy ... "embraces" is too strong a word... Straight Eye for the Straight Guy... welcomes skinny jeans. Subject to the following preconditions:

  • You are reasonably slim
  • You are not below 5'8"
  • You do not have short legs
  • Your skinny jeans must hit the "sweet spot of skinniness"

Think - a thickly built stout man wearing skinny jeans looks about as stylish as a wrestler in a leotard.

Even more importantly, your skinny jeans must fit like a glove - a leather glove, not a skintight rubber glove - tapered and fitting but at the same time making allowance for some breathing space.

 Nope.

Yup.

Because while we all want to look sharp, it would be unwise to do so at the expense of future generations.

If you opt to go skinny, make sure your entire outfit coordinates. If your jeans are skinny, make sure the rest of your getup leans towards the way of the skinny as well - streamline your outfit

In conclusion, skinny jeans are certainly not for everybody - many men don't look fly as a skinny jeans kinda guy (rhyme alert).  But if you fulfill all the aforementioned criteria above and want to try something different, by all means. What's life without a little (mis-)adventure.

erm... the last pic is kinda disturbing. Anyway, about the skinny jeans, if it flatters your body, go for it. But not suitable for those who are heavy at the bottom or chunky...

You are not below 5'8"
You do not have short legs

I absolutely dissagree with these two points

Below 5'8"
I am sorry if you haven't notice but there are plenty of people under 5'8", who rocked skinny jeans perfectly. We are Asians, being under 5'8" is normal. According to a published report; Distribution of Body Weight, Height and Body Mass Index in a
National Sample of Malaysian Adults in Med J Malaysia 2000; 55: 108-128, the average Malaysia height is 5'4"

About that second point about having short legs.. hmmm.. well jeans don't come in one size and cuts which does include skinny jeans. Some guys buy girls jeans, no i mean, they actually have to get a girl jean to fit their body (those who are normal height)
sometimes we need to get in altered to get the best fit, regardless you go for skinny jeans, boot cut, straight, low rise, or baggy. my brother who is less than 5'0" wears girls jeans or alters his own jeans to fit him. Unless you are unluckly born with really short legs, this point has to be rejected also.

However, I agree with the rest of your points. One can don a skinny jeans but not to the point it get really really sausage tight and show the world what you are really packing inside. Its also true, that you need to be reasonably slender, not body builder size (with body builder size, every jeans becomes a skinny jeans).

budlee: I'm 5'5" and have to buy girls' clothing (unisex looking) to get it fit without alterations, and I'm not even asian!
